Feedback from the Hermitage Green questionnaire which was closed 2nd February 2008

Firstly many thanks for the time and effort that you have put in to providing feedback on the topics required. Matt Frost and I can now use your feedback to:

  1. Pursue local issues which have been raised at the Hermitage Parish Council
  2. Pursue issues which we have with the local council and Banner Homes.

32 properties responded to the questionnaire and the results are detailed below.

If the numbers for any answer do not add up to 32, then that is because some people did not answer all the questions.

Parking

Please can people park appropriately within the development, where possible, please can they use their drives, and where provided the appropriate parking spaces.
Specifically around the apartments and from number1 to number 8, also along the side of the green from number 8 to number 23

May it be suggested that the parking spaces provided for the first group of houses on the left as you drive in be used, there are 7 spaces provided for them to park their cars and to date I have only seen a rusting beetle parked there. There really is no need to park in the road whilst spaces are empty.

We would suggest parking restrictions opposite driveways

It would be good to have security lighting in the parking area between number 5 and number 6 as it's very dark at night.

The road sweeper and other commercial vehicles (vans etc) are a nuisance and detract from the general ambience of the area.

I am fed up with the lorry parked on the road.

People should park their cars in the parking spaces provided as you enter the development. With vehicles parked along the road (and some facing the wrong way) it does not look good but more importantly restricts the view when driving in or out of the development. Can people also not park around the green as this also restricts viewing when arriving or leaving the development.

I was disappointed to read that somebody had complained about the road-sweeper as we feel that the parking is very considerate and it does not cause a problem.

The two excavations on opposite sides of the road between number 5 and 6
This is a hazard to both vehicles and pedestrians and has been there for many months. Why has this taken so long to complete

Does anyone know who is responsible for the excavation both sides of the road as we come into the green? Is this Banner Homes or a Utility Company

The two holes that have been dug and left are a hazard and eyesore as we walk and drive in and out of Hermitage Green. Can you please help to find out who is responsible and remedy?

I want to see the road works on the bend removed.

When will the road works as you enter the estate be completed

Parish Council Notice Board
Feelings are mixed on this from yes we would like one, to no we do not want one and it may be a source for graffiti and vandalism. It was also felt that by not having a notice board in the development encourages residents to visit the village hall and village shop/post office to understand latest news and information within the village. This will be fed back to the parish council at the next meeting.

We feel that there is adequate provision for notice boards without the need for one on the development. Having to visit the village hall or shop engages people with the village community. The provision of a website is useful. further a notice board could attract vandalism

We do not want a notice board, we like the idea that going to the village shop means that you can find out about the village, and support the village shop and post office.

Low Level Lighting within the development.
Views on this varied, some would like it as long as it is low level, some do not want it to ensure that the light pollution is kept to a minimum and to not spoil the aspect of the green. this will be raised with the Parish Council, Banner Homes and West Berkshire Council, however it must be understood that the wish to have street lighting goes against the Village Plan.

We are surprised that the village plan does not include street lighting, surely lighting would give us all better health and safety, and added security.

Any lighting on the development would be totally inappropriate and spoil the rural location.

Depends what/where planned, lighting around the green would be OK.

In theory I am in favour of low level lighting, but where would the lights start and end? would this also include security lighting in the car park?

Having moved here it has been wonderful to have no light pollution save for that given off by properties outside lights and windows. To be able to see the stars on a clear night is so wonderful. If you go out at night and are worried about finding the way, take a torch.

Rubbish Bins
Could it be suggested that all bins are kept out of site at the rear of properties rather than being kept on your front door step. Not only does it look awful, it is not a very nice welcome as you drive into Hermitage Green.

The Roundabout at the end of Station Road
This has very poor sightlines looking up Newbury Road and therefore it is difficult to see if there is any traffic coming before pulling out. There has been an accident there recently but do not know the circumstances of how it was caused.

The Banner Homes signs at the entrance to the development, now that there is only one or two houses remaining for sale, is it possible for Banner Homes to remove their signs from the end of Station Road?

Stump of Metal sticking out of ground
There is a stump of a sign post adjacent to the hut/substation on the corner of Station Road / Hermitage Green. It is a trip hazard and needs to be removed.

Can the diseased elm trees be replaced by "Princeton Elms" which are resistant to Dutch Elm Disease?
